How A Grandma on Facebook Showed Off Singapore’s Racial Harmony.

2021 has just gotten started and it’s already seen some massive events, including the storming of the US Capitol building by Trump supporters. Racial tensions run hot around the world but it seems like our teeny little island hasn’t really been affected by them. Racial Harmony is still holding strong in Singapore!

Browsing Facebook, I stumbled upon this heartwarming piece by Ong Beng Lee.

In it, the grandmother of two posts about an encounter she had with a delivery man in Pasir Ris.

Instead the usual moaning and complaining we’re all accustomed to online, Ong’s post is one of kindness and understanding.

Upon encountering the man, Ong had no idea what he was up to.

She went closer to get a better look and saw the man praying. Her admiration of the man’s dedication to the rule of law (he’s still wearing a mask) and his religion spurred her to post her encounter online.

With all the chaos and strife in the world, it’s gladdening to see that despite it all, Singapore’s values such as racial harmony are still engrained in us all.

We should all strive to be more like Ong Beng Lee…our society would be all the better for it.
